Apple TV - $99
Pros -
1. Its small
2. It has an apple on it
3. Steve Jobs is holding it
Cons -
1. Its an apple product
2. It requires that you have a computer
3. You have to pay for just about everything you watch.... typical
4. Doesn't play YouTube videos
5. Can't get on Facebook either.
6. No Storage (i think)
What this little black box does is connect your TV to your iTunes account on your computer. So you can listen to music, look at your photos, and watch movies and tv shows from your library or rent them ( Does anyone really sit down that often to show people pictures, like I have never got all my friends around my computer to show them my pictures. Ever apple device always has the ability to show a slide show of their pictures, but I only think a few people out of the millions only really use it.. like old people with grandkids... or in reality probably don't know how to set it up to be able to do it... so they just resort to the photo album books that are at least 10 years out of date) . So basically, this is just like having your iTunes hooked up to your tv for 100 bucks.... yay...
Google TV - $200
Pros -
1. Its shiny as opposed to apple tv's matte color
2. Made by logitech - that in itself is better than apple
3. You can get on Facebook and YouTube... at the same time!!
4. Netflix!
5. You can get apps!
Cons -
1. Its $200 bucks
2. Doesn't connect to iTunes
3. No Storage
So basically this is just a small computer.. that doesn't do a lot of things but web browse and stream videos. For a big price tag.
To have my iTunes on my tv. The ability to watch YouTube and chat it up on facebook (and heck write a blog post). I have invented my own device.
Drew ShoeBox computer - $20 (All I had to buy was a keyboard and mouse!)
Pros -
1. Was $20
2. Fully functional computer that runs Linux Ubuntu
3. I can surf the web at blazing single core 2.6Ghz speeds..
4. You can even play video games!
5. 700 gigs of space for movies, tv shows, and music .. (and I guess pictures but I have none)
Cons -
1. You have to turn it on with a screwdriver by connecting to prongs on the motherboard
2. Might catch on fire being on a shoebox
3. Not the prettiest thing, but for a dorm room its freaking awesome
So my point being is that what Apple and Google offers is just something to take your money for something you might already have. I'm sure some people have old computers at home and you cant easily convert it into a shoebox computer and hook it up to your tv, even if it is "slow" you can install Ubuntu and it makes any slow computer fast. Or if you have a laptop you can also easily hook it up to your tv and watch whatever is on your computer on your tv. Save your money, ask a smart friend or grandkid to set your laptop up to your tv... its simple...

Haha, I love your solution. You could even pretend that it's art. Plus, it makes you look smart that you have stuff with chips and wires that does stuff.
